Economic Maintenance: The Blantyre Bus Depot
This
photo essay looks at the people behind the scenes who keep the city and
countrywide buses running, and therefore keep people 
moving about Malawi. The
men and women of the bus depot play a key role in the maintenance of the
Malawian economy. Almost everyone 
is
dependent on these buses to transport their wares and themselves up and down the
roads. These buses provide a critical link between rural and urban areas, and
the bus maintenance crew, from mechanics to kitchen staff and administrators,
play a key role in this transportation in Malawi. With incredible
resourcefulness, the bus depot crew scrapes by with few supplies, but they still
manage to hold the aging fleet of buses together. The photos in this essay focus
on the committed workers of the Blantyre bus depot.
